Letter to Social Studies and World/American History Teachers

Dear Social Studies Educator:

As you begin the spring semester and prepare to plan ways and possibilities of enhancing your social studies curriculum for your students, we would like to introduce to you the Global Perspectives Project and inform you of our free services. We, the Organization of Islamic Speakers Midwest, are a not-forprofit educational organization that was established in 2001. Our organization trains and certifies professional speakers who present high quality, informative, and objective presentations to varying institutions on Islam & Muslims. One of our most requested and successful projects has been the Global Perspectives Project, which is the packaged plan we offer to Social Studies teachers like you. It includes but is not limited to:

  • 40 minute Power Point presentations with Question/Answer session with speaker
  • Islamic artifacts
  • Lesson Plans that correlate with your curriculum and Social Studies IL- Learning Standards
  • Online resources of websites & books on Islam

Not only are our presentations in accordance with the First Amendment Rights Act but they are also in abidance with the No Child Left Behind Act. By connecting our objectives to the Social Studies ILLearning Standards and to the National Council of Social Studies (NCSS), we are confident our presentations will aid you in engaging and establishing a deep understanding in the minds of young students who are the future of our democracy.

According to the Social Studies IL-Learning Standards, the competent social science teacher understands major social and cultural developments and compares patterns of continuity and change in different regions of the world. Specifically, the social studies teacher understands the origins, central ideas and influence of major religious and philosophical traditions, such as Buddhism, Islam, Confucianism, Judaism and Christianity. The study of culture allows students to understand that cultures are dynamic and ever changing.

To date, we have delivered over 500 presentations to public and private schools throughout the Chicagoland area. Feedback from our evaluation sheet reflects the project’s overwhelming success. In light of our current global situation and the importance of educating our students about the Islamic culture, we encourage you to take this opportunity to contact us at (630) 848-1475 or by e-mail at admin@oismidwest.org to schedule a presentation at your earliest convenience.

We look forward to assisting you in creating a better understanding of Islam and the Muslim people.

Sincerely Yours,
Asma Akhras, M.Ed.
Global Perspectives Project.
